The Best Way to Store your Baked Goods

Happy Bear Baking · January 16, 2021 ·

So, you’ve had a bout of insanity and baked entirely too many tasty treats for you to eat on your own. Or your tea party got cancelled thanks to the coronavirus. Either way, don’t throw those scones out! They can still be saved!

First of all, your baked goods will stay fresh on the counter for up to five days if stored in an airtight container, we’re a big fan of the glass ones for some class but you can feel free to use whatever you’ve got handy!

You might think to put those scones in the refrigerator. After all, the fridge is where we put things we want to keep fresh, right? But don’t do it! The fridge is where baked goods go to die. The whole point of refrigeration is to use cold air to slow bacterial activity in food, making it last longer. But cold air is also dry air, and will suck the moisture right out of your scones and biscuits turning them stale faster than if just left out on the counter. In fact, the only baked goods you should even consider refrigeration for, are baked goods made with raw dairy and eggs, like pumpkin or custard pies. Even frosted cakes shouldn’t be refrigerated if you want it to stay fresh longer.

So, let’s say you’ve got a lot of scones and biscuits and you’re worried that they’ll become stale before you can enjoy them. What do you do? Throw them away in disgust? Feed them to your dog? Cry dramatically at the unfairness of life? No, there’s another way!

Most people don’t realize that you can put baked goods in the freezer. Yes, you read that correctly. You can take scones or biscuits from your Happy Bear Baking Kit, or most any other baked good, and freeze it, and it will stay fresh for up to 3 MONTHS after baking it. All you have to do is thaw them out and enjoy! For best results, make sure to wrap your treats in plastic wrap, and then in aluminum foil before putting them in the freezer. Also, make sure that you let the baked goods cool completely before freezing them. This ensures that excess moisture isn’t trapped inside them once they’re frozen. Otherwise, they might become gummy and heavy once thawed out.

Of course, there is another way to make sure your delicious baked goods don’t go stale….share them! Friends, coworkers, family members, hungry blog writers….whoever you like! But remember, if you want to keep your scones fresher for longer, keep them out of the refrigerator! Either keep them stored on a counter, or for long term storage, stash them in your freezer. Just don’t forget they’re in there!

Happy Bear Tips for Instagram Friendly Baking

Happy Bear Baking · October 13, 2020 ·

One of the best parts about baking, besides eating it of course, is sharing it with your friends online! The recipes in our Happy Bear Baking Kits are specially crafted to be as photogenic as they are delicious: very. Follow these tips to help you rack up all the likes!

Preheat your Oven!

We know it can be super tempting to just slide everything in the oven as soon as you can, but good baking takes time. Letting your oven preheat means everything will bake evenly, so you’re less likely to end up with treats that are over or underdone! Since every Oven is unique, (just like our recipes!) we recommend giving your oven an extra 10 minutes or so, to ensure that it’s up to temperature!

No Peeking!

There’s nothing better than the smell of fresh baking, and it can be hard to resist cracking your oven door to catch a whiff while you just “check and see if it’s ready” but every time you open the oven you’re introducing much cooler air, which can mean things take longer than normal to bake. If you need to check on the progress you’re making with your baking, use the oven window!

Chill out!

At Happy Bear Baking Company even our professional baker bears have been known to snag a cookie or scone right as it’s piping hot out of the oven, but if you want the most photogenic baking, be sure to let everything cool completely before you get your paws on it! Once things are cooled off they’re less likely to crack and crumble when you put them on a plate. You can set your goodies aside on the counter to let them cool down, though if you have a wire rack that can also help!

Tidy Up!

Any of our Baker Bears will tell you, a tidy kitchen is a happy kitchen! While you’re waiting for your goodies to cool, take this time to make your mama bear proud and clear up the mess you’ve made! No one wants to see a mess of crumbs and batter! Give everything a wipedown!

Props are Cool!

Just your baking by itself can sometimes be a little lonely. Props can help give your photos a chance to show off your personality! Try experimenting until you’ve got something that compliments your fresh baked treats, such as some jam, a cutting board, nice plate or your favourite mug can work perfectly here!

Use lots of light!

Once your goodies are nice and cool, they’ll look their best in good lighting! Our Photograbear recommends that you try and use natural light as often as you can, because sunlight is very flattering. If you don’t have many windows, or you’ve decided to bake at night, that’s totally fine! Consider turning on all your lights and try to avoid the flash on your phone if you can help it!  Using lots of light also means that you’ll be less likely to need a tripod!
